Assam moves to repeal Muslim marriage law

The Assam government introduced a bill to replace the 1935 Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, making registration of Muslim marriages and divorces compulsory with the government. The new law eliminates the role of qazis, providing financial aid for their rehabilitation. The opposition criticized the move as discriminatory and politically motivated.
